WATCH: The Prayers of D-Day, 80 Years Later
This week at The European Conservative, I have an obituary for Brigadier General Bud Anderson, the last World War II triple flying ace. I interviewed him some time ago; he was a terror of the skies over Europe, and helped eliminate the Luftwaffe in the leadup to Operation Overlord. His story is simply extraordinary: “The Last of the Greatest Generation: Clarence E. ‘Bud’ Anderson (1922-2024).”
Today is the 80th anniversary of D-Day. It was the largest seaborne invasion in the history of humanity; thousands of Allied soldiers surged up the Normandy beaches, and thousands died. They were defending a civilization that was still then self-consciously Christian, and in Calgary, Canada, thousands packed the streets to offer up prayers on behalf of the boys on the beaches. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt offered up a public prayer to “Almighty God.”
