That was happening well before covid. For decades now, journalism and government credibility has been spiralling and like Jonathan said, transgenderism was a strong catalyst for breaking down that trust. Though, to your point, covid was probably the final nail for quite a few who would have been hanging on to some semblance of faith in institutions but the further the government pushed, the more plainly their incredibility showed.
However, a lot of people already had their minds made up 2 weeks into the lockdowns.
